ISLAND HOUSE
Island House is an interior design studio and gallery space for unique art and objects. Founder Melissa Jenkinson is a lifelong collector of anything unique. The studio houses numerous pieces from local artists, as well as unique furniture and objects from around the globe.
For Cayman Art Week, the studio, which is proudly located in a 150-year-old traditional Caymanian house in the center of George Town, will host an exhibition of A Place in Time, featuring several of the island’s lesser-known artists: Emmie Cross, Renate Seffer, Elise Shelley, and Lucy Gardener, each with their own take of life in Cayman.
Lucy is a local interior designer who paints in her spare time. As a Caymanian, her paintings celebrate the old churches she remembers from her childhood. Though there is increasing architectural change and development on the island, the churches remain the same and serve as a memory of a simple, safe, and happy childhood in Cayman.
Charlotte is a multidisciplinary creative who brings a unique vision to her work as an artist and designer. Drawing on her background in set design, she employs space as a means of weaving compelling narratives that are immersive and captivating. Charlotte is also well-versed in the disciplines of botanical sculpture and painting. With a keen interest in food and cultural heritage, she infuses her creations with an expressive, introspective quality that brings her subjects to life.
Born and raised in the Cayman Islands, Elise is one of our youngest exhibitors. At 13 years old, she dreams of being an artist. Passionate and driven, Elise is inspired by the natural beauty of our islands and embraces a variety of mediums, such as acrylics, watercolors, and ink pens. Her work reflects her perspective of the Cayman Islands but also her deep connections to her roots and culture. Most recently, she won the CIMA Online Children's Art competition and endeavours to continue expressing herself through her art.
Emmie is largely an ‘outsider’ or folk artist whose love for the imperfect translates into her work. With a focus on local culture and people, her naïve style encapsulates a simplicity that is endearing yet expressive. As a part-time artist, she does it for love rather than a career choice.
