CAYMAN ART WEEK
CAYMAN ART WEEK CONFIRMED FOR JUNE 22-26, 2022
After a successful inaugural year which brought together over 30 art venues for a week-long celebration of art, Cayman Art Week (CAW) is confirmed for June 2022. The annual event brings together art venues across all three islands. It seeks to raise visibility for the sector through a joined-up platform that connects art lovers and collectors directly with creators.
This year, the five-day event will start on 22 June and run through 26 June. Following the model established in 2021, participating venues will be open throughout the week and each day, focusing on a particular area of Grand Cayman. Thursday is ‘CAW West’ (West Bay and Seven Mile Beach), Friday ‘CAW Central /Art in the City’ (George Town area) in partnership with George Town Revitalisation, Saturday is ‘CAW East’, with a focus on the Eastern Districts, and Sunday will be dedicated to a tri-island 'Open Studio Day’, where artists across all three islands open their doors to the public. Venues in the Sister Islands will be hosting events throughout the week.
The vibrant programme will highlight established art galleries, pop-up exhibitions, and art events featuring both established names and emerging talents alongside a public programme of discussions, studio visits, and performances. Twenty-seven venues are already confirmed, with more to follow.
CAW returns with many of its 2021 partners, including CAW's Patron, Mrs Susan A. Olde, OBE, lead partners: Provenance Properties Cayman Islands, the National Gallery of the Cayman Islands and George Town Revitalisation; as well as the Cayman Islands Department of Tourism, and REAL LIFE Magazine. In addition, CAW is excited to be launching a new partnership with the Ministry of Youth, Sports Culture and Heritage. Thanks to these project partners, CAW continues to offset costs for participating partners to ensure all proceeds from the sale of artwork goes directly to the organisations and artists. It also ensures that CAW registration is free for all visitors and guests.
“We are excited to see so many returning supporters and venues this year. Cayman Art Week 2022 is shaping up to be another vibrant week of events that celebrate the diversity of Cayman’s art sector and the role that galleries play in Cayman’s creative economy as it begins to bounce back from the pandemic,” says CAW founder Natalie Urquhart, “Once again, we hope the event will increase visibility for the vibrant gallery and studio sector and create a unique community event where all members of our community can enjoy access to art experiences across all three islands.”
Says Colin Lumsden, George Town Manager & Revitalisation Initiative Coordinator, “The Ministry of Planning, Agriculture, Housing and Infrastructure, through the George Town Revitalisation Initiative, is thrilled to have been a partner of Cayman Art Week from the very beginning, and we look forward to working together again on this innovative festival that is making local art more visible and accessible on a commercial level. Art in the City in George Town showed how important the collaboration of culture and the creative economy is for our capital and its resident artists.”
All participating venues will be listed on the Cayman Art Week website in advance of the event. This online component is the first time these venues have been available via a single website. Content includes profiles and artwork samples from featured venues and their contact and location details, and an easy to use google map.
